Development work

IQmulus aims at the development and integration of an infrastructure and platform that will support critical decision-making processing in geospatial applications by setting the following research objectives:

Develop a system for the fusion and integration of very large, highly heterogeneous spatial data sets of different provenance, integrating processing and visualisation. 

  • Developing a system for the fusion and integration of very large, highly heterogeneous spatial data sets such as n-dimensional grid and non-grid coverages and point clouds of different provenance, including processing and visualisation;
  • Creating a model for hierarchic, domain-specific languages with which algorithms for processing of coverages and point clouds;
  • Building a spatial data processing middleware that abstracts from different parallel and distributed processing infrastructures;

Develop methods for knowledge-driven processing of topographic data (WP4)

  • This wealth of information can be used to make feature extraction from point cloud data more efficient and flexible by enabling training with the inclusion of existing ancillary data and a priori knowledge.
  • Furthermore, we plan to develop descriptive information to a dataset (metadata) explaining where it comes from and how it was processed, leading to provision of processing semantics.
  • Capturing this extracted knowledge requires the development of a suitable annotation model defining semantic scopes for all different modelling paradigms.

Infrastructure Design (WP2)

This work package performs the analysis and design tasks required for developing the infrastructure for processing and visualisation. Specifically, this work package's goals are to:

  • Perform an in-depth analysis of current spatial data processing architectures, testing different algorithms for their suitability to be executed with large and very large data sets;
  • Design the components and interfaces of the IQmulus processing framework;
  • Design the processing domain-specific languages.

Heterogeneous Data Integration Platform (WP3)

The core objective of this WP is to provide an implementation of the infrastructure designed in WP 2. This includes the following partial objectives to:

  • Set up the required development infrastructure such as a distributed VCS and a build/continuous integration system;
  • Organize collaborative development between the involved partners by carrying out code camps and other measures;
  • Implement infrastructure management tools (i.e. for workflow and deployment management) based on existing frameworks;
  • Implement toolkits for the functional processing services;
  • Implement the required integration components for domain processing services;
  • Implement service components and facades.

Processing Services (WP4)

WP 4 aims to develop the functional and domain processing services of IQmulus in order to: maximize the use of data, provide task-specific packing and delivery of data sets, support data quality evaluation, and provide support for analysing quickly changing environmental conditions. The objectives of WP 4 are:

  • to define the methodological guidelines to drive integration and geometry generation tasks, quality assessment and management, documentation of the processing history;
  • to develop methods and algorithms to support data classification, feature extraction, detection and characterization of dynamic events (morphological and resolution changes), semantic enrichment;
  • to implement the toolkit for the basic and domain processing services of the IQmulus platform, according to the specifications given by WP 1 and WP 2.

Interactive Visual Decision Support (WP5)

The core objective is a better support for visual decision making and interactive visual communication on large heterogeneous geo-spatial and temporal data sets for expert users (consultants preparing decisions) and decision makers.

To perform continuous integration of all technologies available to IQmulus, ready to be deployed as a product release.
